Home Gardener – Ansoo
Growing vegetables at home in megacities is not easy due to lack of space. Recently two large newspapers featured Ansoo’s efforts in nurturing kitchen gardens at home – on balconies, windowsills, terraces and other sunny spots available to most of us:
“Millennials’” love for gardening is blooming in a big way”

Ansoo Gupta also conducts similar workshops. Living in Mumbai, space is a constraint, but Gupta says it shouldn’t stop anyone. “I had what I called a windowsill farm, where I grew palak, methi, bhindi and tamatar.” She adds that she knows of several community gardens that have come up in Bandra — people come together to set up gardens on someone’s terrace or balcony, and divide duties to take care of their plants and split the produce.

“GARDEN OF EARTHLY DELIGHTS” – Fun recipes, inspired by veggies that grow in the balcony, to keep meals healthy during the lockdown.
Here Ansoo also shared a simple yet yummy plant-to-plate recipe which is healthy for the body and fulfilling for the soul too.
TOMATO PRESERVE WITH NIGELLA SEEDS
Digital marketing professional Ansoo Gupta has six tomato plants in her balcony this season. “If you plant them in November, you get tomatoes through the winter months. I am still getting the remnants of the season,” she shares. With last week’s harvest, she made a batch of tomato preserve.

Spending time at home has given an opportunity to many people to connect better with their plants and even look at spaces at home in a new light – which means some places which get ample sunlight but are not used – a corner in the room, a wall that stays sunlit throughout the day, an empty balcony etc.
If you have any place that gets sunlight, consider growing plants for flowers, fruits, vegetables, herbs or even just for their soothing greenery. The rainy season is arriving shortly and in general, it makes growing a bit easier.
Ansoo will be conducting an online session shortly where kitchen gardening veterans will be sharing their growing hacks so if you are looking at getting started and learning some kitchen gardening, leave a comment below and we will mail you the details of the session shortly.
